Prague, a picturesque city on the banks of the Vltava River, is one of the most admired capital cities in Europe:It has acquired a reputation, which every year attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, through its multitude of imporatant historical monumnets, its cultural traditions and, last but not least, through its pubs and taverns and their excellent Czech beer.
Prague has managed to almost completely preserve its unique magic, even suriving many military campaings and numerous questionable building operations:While walking through its center you will be able to admire the amazing architectual treasures of the past -- Romanesque rotundas and Gothic cathedrals , labyrithine medieval alleyways and cobbled Baroque streets, churches and squares, well-preseved Renaissance, Art Nouveau and Cubist buildings. In order to ensure that these unique sights are also preserved for future generations, the city of Prague has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Prague has been a center of classical music and theatrical activity for several centuries. Each evening, within the walls of time-honoured buildings, the characters of world-renowned operas, dramas and ballet performances are revived. There are enough of these for all art-loving tourists. Whilst a visit to the Dvořák museum or the Bertramka villa will be an experience for classical music enthusiasts, a walk through the Jewish Quarter of the Old Town, where the literary characters of Kafka and Meyrink roam, will certainly leave an impression with those who wish to pursue the mysteries of German literature in Prague. Besides these classical leanings, Prague also has its own contemporary jazz, rock and alternative music culture, as well as a wide and varied dance scene.
Numerous cultural presentations, many festivals, musicals and interesting exhibitions have been organised in response to the huge interest shown by tourists visiting Prague. Travel agencies offer outings to places of interest in the immediate vicinity of Prague as well as excursions to tourits attractions that are further afield. To add a bit of variety to stay in our capital city, one can also take a boat trip or go for a ride on a carriage or historical tram.
"We won´t give up Prague, we would rather knock it down..." is a sentiment expressed in the lyrics of a Czech folk song. Even if we would never actually let such an iniquity come to pass, these words should clearly illustrate how dearly we Praguers love our city. We trust that Prague will find a place in your heart and that you stay in our hotel ibis Praha Karlín will contribute to this experience.
